"Curious and always open to new things" is not just a phrase in motivation letters, but a basic attitude of successful, satisfied people. It often goes hand in hand with the notion of lifelong learning. A concept that is becoming increasingly important in view of the constant changes in the world of work and in society.
Someone who lives this out of conviction, both privately and professionally, is our interview partner of the month. Learning throughout his life, expanding his network and acquiring new skills is the key to his successful, multifaceted professional career.
Raphael Suter, originally from Sursee in the canton of Lucerne, came to Basel in 1981, where he studied classical archaeology, Egyptology and art history at the University of Basel. Interested in many things and curious by nature, the student with an affinity for art and culture was already writing for the Basler Zeitung in the 1980s. In the years that followed, he made a name for himself as a well-connected local and cultural journalist with in-depth knowledge. He demonstrated his leadership skills and economic understanding after moving from the Basler Zeitung to Radio Basilisk. From 2003 to 2008, he held operational responsibility as editorial and program manager before returning to Basler Zeitung as head of culture and member of the editorial board.
After more than 30 years in the media, Raphael Suter felt the need to switch sides in 2019 and tackle new projects. As director and member of the board of trustees of the Basel H. Geiger Cultural Foundation (KBH.G), he has since been actively involved in shaping the arts and culture sector. According to the wishes of its patron, the foundation has set itself the goal of making culture an experience for as many people as possible. Attractive stagings, a non-elitist attitude as well as free admissions should also encourage people who are not routine museum visitors to visit the showroom on Spitalstrasse in Basel.
Experiencing the world, opening up new horizons for himself and others is essential for the bon vivant and gourmet. In addition to art and culture, his passions include beautiful watches and good food. In an interview with Batterman Consulting, he reveals, among other things, what would have become of him if he had not chosen journalism.
Mr. Suter, if you had taken a different path when you were younger, what would you have become?
"I could have imagined training at the hotel management school in Lausanne. Traditional hotels fascinate me and I would like to take on a host role in such a house."
What is your favorite way to start your day?
"Quietly with a cup of coffee, without already being approached by my co-workers."
What does success mean to you personally?
"Recognition and respect from those closest to you."
What would you work for free for a week?
"On a dig in Jordan or Egypt. I've never done that since I graduated as a classical archaeologist."
What was the best professional advice you ever received?
"Find your own path, even if you don't know where it will ultimately lead you."
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Suter for his contribution to this article. This interview was conducted in writing.

"MUSIC - A Conversation Through Song Titles"
For the upcoming exhibition, the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger | KBH.G has decided to cooperate with the Basel artist duo Jahic/Roethlisberger. From September 9 to November 14, the two conceptual, media and installation artists Admir Jahic and Comenius Roethlisberger will present their latest art and book project "Music - A Conversation Through Song Titles".
Following the international success of their book project "Artist's Recipes," the two have invited national and international artists to participate in a dialogue. On display are more than 80 song title conversations - always in handwriting, sometimes with drawings, and twelve times as neon installations. The exhibition is accompanied by a wide-ranging program on the subject of music.
