The contribution that laboratory medicine in Switzerland makes to healthcare and society as a whole became abundantly clear during the pandemic. Immunity, tests, antibodies: these terms have found their way into our vocabulary.
However, medical laboratory analysis is a more complex industry without which our healthcare system would not function. Medical diagnoses and therapies rely heavily on analytical results from laboratories. Thus, laboratory medicine can contribute to rapid disease detection and save lives.
Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, virtually all laboratories have been busy around the clock processing PCR coronate tests. In addition to this heavy workload, finding additional qualified personnel has also been a major challenge. Regardless of the pandemic, the tasks in laboratories are very diverse and are performed by physicians and experts, chemists and biomedical analysts, who are desperately needed.
Also Bioanalytica, the leading polyvalent laboratory for hospital and practice in Central Switzerland, experienced a real boom. With state-of-the-art working methods and great expertise, it provides Bioanalytica provide a reliable, rapid and patient-oriented service for their clients. In doing so, they offer competent laboratory medical analysis in various specialties: Clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and cytology.
The career of David Baumann, Lucerne site manager at Bioanalytica, also shows that this is an exciting professional field with many opportunities. After his training as a medical laboratory assistant and further training as a chemist FH in Winterthur, he worked for 15 years at the Pathology Institute of the Cantonal Hospital in Lucerne. For 11 years he has now been site manager at Bioanalytica and is more fascinated than ever by the responsible tasks that his team performs day after day. Mr. Baumann, if you had taken a different path when you were younger, what would you have become?
"As a child and even today, I was and still am an enthusiastic sportsman, so there was also the option of becoming a sports teacher. What would have become of me with this training can only be speculated."
What is your favorite way to start your day?
"My workday starts with a bike ride to work. This gives me the opportunity to exercise, as I usually spend most of my time at work sitting down. Once I arrive at work, I am motivated to take on and complete the tasks at hand."
What does success mean to you personally?
"When I am satisfied and happy, I am successful in my private life. Business success for me is when we make enough profit to reinvest and can offer employees work that they enjoy doing."
What would you work for free for a week?
"I coach a children's soccer team. To do this, I take a week's vacation in the summer, during which I train with the children in the morning and afternoon. I don't receive any financial compensation for this, but I enjoy the joy that the children show in the training sessions.."
What was the best professional advice you ever received?
"Encourage employees by challenging them without overburdening them."
We would like to thank Mr. Baumann for his contribution to this article. This interview was conducted in writing.
