What goes through your mind when you wake up in the morning and think about your upcoming workday? If the thought of your work fills you with joy, you may be working in your dream job. Our blog post this week deals with this very topic. We asked ourselves: What actually makes a dream job?

Our profession determines a large part of our everyday life. We spend several hours working every day. A great motivator is certainly the salary that we get transferred to our account at the end of the month. But the salary should not be the biggest motivation. Rather, the fun factor and the meaning of the work should be in the foreground. That's why many people are looking for their dream job. But finding it is not that easy:

The dream job fulfills all personal ideas and expectations and enables us to make the best use of our own strengths and talents. The dream job does not feel like work, because it fills us with satisfaction and fun and thus contributes significantly to self-actualization. In addition, the dream job offers financial stability and enables an optimal work-life balance.

The problem is, no job is always fun and nothing in life is "perfect". Every profession also has its downsides. That's why it's almost impossible to find a job that fulfills all the factors of the dream job. Because as the word implies, it is a dream. However, it is possible to come quite close to it. To do this, we need to ask ourselves: What actually makes a dream job?

There are many factors that a dream job must meet. These can be:

  • Sense of purpose: Without meaning, hardly any motivation - The dream job must make personal sense.
  • Tasks: The dream job should be varied and challenging. Otherwise, boredom quickly sets in.
  • Salary: Money isn't everything, but we still need to be able to cover our living costs. Accordingly, the dream job must offer fair compensation.
  • Work location: Many people value the proximity to their place of work and are reluctant to waste their time commuting.
  • Work-life balance: Work-life balance is very important to many people. According to a study conducted on behalf of XING Switzerland, work-life balance is even the most important factor in finding the dream job.
  • Working atmosphere: The working atmosphere is also a decisive factor. In the dream job, the idea of "working together instead of against each other" should have priority.
  • Further development opportunities: The dream job should offer prospects for the future.
  • Safety: It is important that the dream job provides a sense of "security."

In the study commissioned by Xing Switzerland mentioned above, 500 employed German-speaking Swiss between the ages of 18 and 65 were asked about their dream job. There were 47 professions to choose from. The study came to the conclusion that professions involving personal contact with people and a physical environment are still more popular than professions related to digitization and social trends, such as software developer or climate researcher. Below are the six dream jobs of the women and men surveyed.

Women's dream jobs:

1. doctor
2. photographer
3. veterinarian
4. animal keeper
5. guide
6. accountant

Men's dream jobs:
